Alcohol and Your Health

I guess this is for my younger audience of viewers/subscribers. Hey I still like to consider myself relatively young. You know my grandpa is almost like 100 years old, and he always told me “You’re as young as you feel”. I always liked that, especially when it’s coming from a guy who’s in his 90’s and has as much energy as the roadrunner. You know, he’s right though. Anyway, speaking of something that can shave a couple years off our own life expectancies. That’s right guys, partying.

Maybe you’re still young, or maybe you’re still wild, either way, stay cautious with this one. I mean if you smoke cigarettes that’s another thing, but if you drink in excess on a regular basis, no good no good no good. I think in our country, alcohol and cigarettes kill more people than anything else, especially if you combine their yearly fatalities. Now that’s a statistic if I ever saw one. Now I’m not saying if you party a lot you’re going to die, noooo. What I am saying is that it can affect your bodies composition and overall health all in due time. I guess what I’m recommending is that you pace yourself in this scene. Remember, everything in moderation. That’s a phrase we’ve heard countless times throughout all our lives, but it’s true to the core.

If you’re going to drink, but you don’t want to pack on those calories, stay away from all those thick and creamy dark lagers. If you want to smoke, um, well I don’t have any advice here. Well I guess it all depends on what it is we’re talking about. For all those cannabis users out there, hey that’s fine, whatever floats your boat. But the same philosophy behind smart partying still applies even with cannabis use, everything in moderation. Getting completely drunk or whacked out of your skull is something of the past for most of us, but for some reason we’re tempted to go back to it every once and a while huh? Yeah I know, hey me too. Just try not to forget about the repercussions, and then you’ll completely reassess the night even before it begins.

I would say drinking is the worst thing for your system. It can ruin your liver, and not only affect the interior, but skew your exterior. I mean, making decisions’ that you’d normally never make sober. That’s my biggest complaint with it. Otherwise, hey I love drinkin’ just as much as the next guy. However, I save my gulping reflex usually for the weekends. I encourage this behavior because it can be fun, but I don’t condone anything party related in excess, well except maybe sex. Haha! No I’m just playing around, but I digress.

Tread softly is all I’m saying, work hard, play harder is another expression I’ve heard that can work in some lights. Drinking hard all the time because you have a highly demanding job doesn’t get the checkmark on my list. Maybe something more along the lines of staying out with friends until the sun comes up is a better example. Just remember, you don’t have a lot of dialogue with your body, so when you’re putting it through a party themed obstacle course, it won’t tell you what’s wrong until it’s already too late. And when it tells you, it won’t with a dialogue, but with gargles, cramps, and uncontrollable projectile vomiting. Just something I wanted to bring into perspective for you guys.

Overcome Depression

You have to make a choice right now! You have to decide that you believe you can create and manage your own destiny. You must realize that you are what you think about most. Whatever you choose to think about will become your life experience. When you are feeling low you are thinking bad thoughts and the chances are if you are feeling good you are feeling good thoughts.

It is very important to keep track of your feelings and if you are feeling low, change your thinking immediately. You can do this by imagining something beautiful, a beautiful place, imagining how you wish your life to be, funny times you have had, a loved one, listen to music you love, imagine a beautiful baby etc. whatever works for you. If one thing doesn’t work try another. This will change your thinking and put you back in the right frame of mind.

The most important thing to realize is that it is impossible to feel good and at the same time have bad thoughts. This is a very important point for the depressed person. Depression by its nature makes us think bad thoughts. We all know when we feel good because we are having good thoughts and likewise we all know when we feel bad because we are thinking bad thoughts. According to the laws of attraction your thinking is the primary cause of everything.

What are you feeling now? If you are not feeling good focus on your feelings and purposefully change your feelings to good feelings. You can do this by closing your eyes and focus on feeling good and at the same time smile for one minute. This may take a lot of work for the depressed person but believe me the more you try it the easier it becomes! I have always recommended that people should always seek professional help for their mental illness. So if you need help do whatever you have to do to start on the road to recovery.

People who suffer from depression and related mental illness should take as much help as they can get. That is part of the secret formula to overcoming depression. Seek and you shall find. Correct, well intended help will make you feel better and you will think happy thoughts which will put you in the right future to create the future you desire.

I am a long time fan of an old saying ‘when the pupil is ready, the teacher will appear’. Get yourself in the right frame of mind for recovery and your teacher will appear too!

Head Lice Treatment

It’s not that you recognize them as soon as you get them. It can in a literal sense take several weeks or a few months just before you identify this harsh truth.

The interesting part is, at times people mix up dandruff with nits and lice. They witness very small white chunks of dirt in a person’s hair and successfully pass a consensus that the guy or girl has lice.

They don’t know the main dissimilarity between nits and dandruff.

Always remember, if you have particularly long hair, then it’s not really easy to see lice, because they survive close to your scalp. The finest way to learn about is to get your hair looked at by someone in your members of the family. Ask them to examine and see if there are any lice or nits in your hair.

The Likelihood Are That You Have Head Lice If…

  • Your scalp is itching.
  • You can feel something running in your hair.
  • You have red-looking lymph nodes in the front or back of your neck.

It will not be an effective idea to start head lice treatment only because you guess you have lice. You must be 100% positive before starting up any head lice treatment.

Anyway, you don’t want to spend your time, energy and money on just one thing that’s not really there.

Now…When you ask a particular person to proceed through your hair and look for lice and nits, they may perhaps possibly get baffled too and think of dandruff as nits.

There is Clear Differentiation Between Dandruff and Nits

Dandruff will fall off your hair promptly and easily, nits won’t.
Nits are securely hooked up to the hair. It’s like as though the female louse uses an intense and effective glue to secure the eggs to the hair.

So, to analyze and uncover if you have dandruff or nits, you really should use a nit comb.

Wet your hair and start combing. If it’s dandruff, then it will start to fall off. If it’s nits, then it will not come off so easily.

If you have dandruff in your hair, then you don’t need head lice treatment. Having said that, if you have head lice, then you must definitely go for head lice treatment.

So, don’t rush. Look for the signals and symptoms or go through the infested person’s hair. Even after looking, if you still can’t figure out whether it is dandruff or nits, then use a nit comb to end the confusion.

Migraine Headache and a Walk in Clinic

Have you ever sat in a room with all the lights turned off in a silent sphinx-like position attempting to empty your mind of all distractions? Although this may sound like something a new-age Buddhist might do, it is also something that a migraine sufferer will do to attempt to alleviate the severe pain that they are experiencing. Migraines are quite simply hard to explain to non-sufferers, the pain is unlike a normal headache and is often times rated as a ten on a one-to-ten numbered pain scale. Visiting doctors, hospitals and a walk in clinic is par for the course for people who have migraines. Treatment is out there if you know where to look.

What is a Migraine?
It is a serious medical issue whose symptoms include excruciating head pain. This “headache” can last anywhere from a couple of hours to a couple of days. Nausea is also a symptom of migraines, as is temporary loss of vision and other eye oddities, such as spots or flashing lights.

When & Where do Migraines Present Themselves?
This varies with the individual sufferer. It can be on one side of the head or both. They can happen around the clock, yet typically are reported that they begin in the morning hours. It is important to have medical help if you are a sufferer of migraines, and any of your city’s many walk in clinics can help you in a variety of ways.

Who Gets Migraines?
It is reported that the average ages for migraine sufferers is between 20 and 45. This does not mean that other ages cannot have them, as that happens commonly. Women are more likely to have migraines, in fact, it is estimated that almost three out of four sufferers are women.

What Causes Migraines?
Although many professionals, including walk in clinics, have studied this issue it is not understood what causes migraines. It may be an imbalance of certain chemicals in the brain, which causes an inflammation which triggers the pain.

What Are The Triggers?
This is a problematic question in an across-the-board-way because triggers are different in all individuals. Some sufferers get an attack when they have too little sleep, some too much sleep. It does seem that stress, skipped meals and alcohol can trigger an episode. It is difficult to say what one person will find to be a trigger, as it varies so very much.

When Should a Doctor Come Into The Equation?
If you are unsure that you need a doctor this is a great sign because all people who suffer from genuine migraines KNOW in their heart-of-hearts that medical help is necessary. If you do need a doctor, think about visiting any of your friendly neighborhood walk in clinics as they possess the skill to diagnose and treat many illnesses, migraines included.

Depression – What About Exercise?

Feeling the blues? Take a hike!

Studies show that people who engage in brisk walking for at least 30 minutes cope better from mild to moderate depression.

Experts agree that one of the most probable reasons is the widely accepted fact that exercise promotes release of “mood elevator” chemicals in the brain like endorphins. In addition, moderate exercise boosts the immune system, protecting the body from sickness which could sometimes trigger depression.

It also helps boost one’s self esteem, especially when one would start seeing improvements in his/her condition. Exercise also allows for one to sleep better while ensuring that one is at its peak energy during the day.

In addition, exercise can be a productive form of distraction for someone suffering from depression. It allows a person to take one’s mind off the issues that’s troubling him/her.

Meanwhile, exercise done in groups allow for one to improve his/her social skills and build a network of support.

The biggest challenge, however, when it comes to depressed individuals is how to keep those butts (pun not intended) out of bed and into the gym or field. That is why, it is very important for one to be determined in getting rid of those blues, after all, who would want to feel low all the time?

This is also where one’s support group would come in handy. Having someone to inspire and force you to move would prove to be helpful, because once you start, it would not be difficult to keep going as even brief periods of exercise could help elevate one’s mood for significant number of hours.

Before starting an exercise regimen, however, it would be wise to consult a doctor so that you would know what exercise to engage in and the limits that you should be putting on your body.

Setting a realistic goal, like being able to jog one kilometer on the first run, would also be recommended, rather than frustrating oneself on trying to achieve something that may seem impossible to accomplish for the first few weeks of exercise.

Another great idea that would help encourage one to exercise is the fact that exercise is not a chore, as such, it is but fitting for one to enjoy it. Look for a sport or some physical activity that best captures your interest. Exercise, after all, is not just about going to the gym or finishing laps in the track. Try swimming or basketball, or how about football or cricket? When you decide to engage in an exercise program, start by learning your favorite sport, in that way you not only develop a new hobby but also an enjoyable means of boosting your immune system and mood.

When you have decided the kind of program to engage in, always consider the basic rule of exercise and that is, start with a 10 to 15-minute warm-up session and end with a cool-down session.

Warm-ups and cool-downs prepare your muscles and cardio-pulmonary system before an activity that could stress them out. It conditions the body, preventing exercise related injuries like sprains and strains, as well as unnecessary stress to the heart.

So, the next time you get visited by sad thoughts, get those running shoes out and chase those blues away.

Nocturnal Asthma – 4 Main Reasons It Can Occur

Not being able to get enough air is frightening any time of day, but when it happens in the middle of the night you are even more vulnerable. Here are 4 common threads that people who experience this condition have and some suggestions for managing the problem.

1. Decrease in FEV1 Ratio - This is basically a measuring of the amount of air a person is able to exhale and they have inhaled as deeply as possible. Normal adult volume is should be between 3 and 5 liters which translates to approximately 80% capacity. This decrease in lung capacity typically occurs during the night which makes symptoms more severe.

A time released bronchodilator prescribed by your physician will help air passages remain open through the night time hours. A peak flow meter will give an accurate reading of your lung capacity which is important in forming a management plan.

2. Lower Amounts of Epinephrine - This hormone helps relax lung muscles and also control the amount of histamines introduced into the body. Being able to control histamines is important because histamines control the amount of mucous that is produced and secreted.

The less mucous the less congestion to clog possibly restricted airways. Studies have shown that this hormone is at its lowest at 4 a.m. which can also account for asthma problems during the night.

Consulting with a physician to determine what your levels are during the night will enable him to prescribe a medication that will allow you to sleep despite the drop in this hormone.

3. Exposure to Allergens - Dust mites are one of the most potent allergens and unfortunately the population in the bedroom is usually highest. Because they are able to build propagate in your bed, bed linens, and pillows, going to sleep there can be a recipe for disaster.

Encasing your pillows and mattresses with allergy covers will greatly reduce your exposure. Wash your linens weekly with water that is 160 degrees Fahrenheit or warmer to kill the mites. Sunlight kills mites, so exposing your sheets to it each morning before you make the bed will help.

4. Late Phase Response - There is usually an initial response or flare up when the body first senses a trigger (dust, dust mites, mold and mildews spores, pet dander, smoke, chemical fumes). Later there is usually a second reaction within several hours. If the first exposure to the trigger is in the evening, the second response is usually longer and more severe.

Making sure your nighttime environment – especially your bedroom – is as free of triggers as possible creates a physical and emotional haven where you are more likely to be able to rest well. 24 hour filtration with a high efficiency particle arresting filter will keep allergen levels low and greatly reduce the amount of triggers in your air.

Chiropractic Management of Low Back Pain

In chiropractic management of low back pain, we have an old adage, “There are only two kinds of people in the world: those that have low back pain and those who are going to get it.” A little bit of an exaggeration? Just ask as many people as you know if they ever had low back, and you will be regaled with horror stories.

So, what do you do if you suddenly get low back pain? Most people run for the heating pad and some kind of OTC, over the counter medication. Could be a big mistake! First, a heating pad, contrary to public opinion, usually makes the pain worse. It increases inflammation. Heat draws more blood to the already inflamed area. The increased blood flow results in the depositing of more substances that increase inflammation, like lactic acid, histamines and prostaglandins.

Combined, these substances increase pain, swelling and redness. Of course, when it comes to the low back, sometimes it’s hard to see these things. Low back pain usually exists where you can’t see it: beneath the skin around the spine, ligaments and tendons.

So let’s examine what often happens in a severe cases, like in a herniated lumbar disc. You may have been a victim of such an event. If you were, you know the symptoms well. They go like this:

  1. When you stand, you’re bent to one side like the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
  2. If you cough, it’s like the end of your world: the sharp, excruciating pain is unbearable.
  3. The muscle spasm is unreal, like somebody has got you in a vise grip.

Have you been there? If you have, you probably wanted to go straight to an emergency room. Barring that, what should you do? To begin with, you should apply ice to the area. Never place the ice directly on your skin because it can burn like fire. Instead, place a towel between the ice and your skin. Keep the ice on your low back for about 25 minutes and then off for about 45 minutes. Ice reduces inflammation by forcing blood, and thus the products of inflammation, away from the low back area. Next, you need some kind of pain pill, especially one that combines anti-inflammatory ingredients. Any OTC product that contains ibuprofen will work.

That’s all good for temporary relief, but what about more long term relief and something approaching a cure? That’s where chiropractic needs some close consideration. The first thing is to determine what’s causing these terrible symptoms. Actually, one of the most common causes, especially if you have the symptoms cited above, is a herniated lumbar disc: a slipped disc. A slipped disc occurs when the jelly-like substance inside the disc breaks through the elastic fibers containing it. It’s sort of like when a bubble forms on the outside of a tire that’s worn thin. But this bubble pinches down on a critical nerve root. Ouch!
Does this condition require and operation? Well, according to research, only a very small percent meet the criteria for an operation: intractable pain at night and loss of bowel and bladder control. This occurs when the tire is flat: the jelly-like contents of the disc has completely leek out.

With proper chiropractic treatment, this condition can be managed successfully. In our chiropractic office, treatment begins with ice and the distraction technique. This totally painless treatment, which is preformed on a specially designed table, decompresses the lumbar disc: reduces the pressure inside the disc. With reduced pressure, there’s less protruding material to pinch or irritate the nerve root. As pain lessens, our doctors begin spinal manipulation, the chiropractic adjustment. This treatment is designed to restore proper spinal joint function: full alignment and complete movement.

Spinal joint function is the key to a successful outcome. Chiropractic adjustments restore proper movement. Proper movement is the function of any joint. If a joint does not move as much as it should, it is a diseased joint. Often patients tell me that their back has seized up. With the inflammation gone and joint function and motion restored, symptoms are usually totally alleviated.

Even in severe cases, proper chiropractic care can quickly reduce and eliminate all symptoms associated with a herniated lumbar disc.

Joint Pains In Children

Millions of people around the globe suffered from joint pains. Joint pains affect about 1 in 5 adults. However, it is a different story when it comes to children suffers from joint pains. Statistics showed that about 300,000 children under the age of 18 years are affected by joint pains, of which 50,000 children are victims of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, or JRA. While joint pain is a common problem with the children, most of the time this is usually not of serious causes. In severe cases, it can be anything from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, Lyme disease or rheumatoid fever.

There are many causes and it is vital that you get an accurate diagnosis of the real source of your symptoms in order to receive appropriate treatment.

Through the children’s growing up years, they will experience pains in the joints from time to time as they undergo physical bodily changes. They grow taller, putting on more weights as well as engage in strenuous physical activities. The physical skeletal changes in the children normally result in pains around the joints, some may not experience the pain at all. Some children may develop fever as a result of the natural joint growth in their body. This pain in the joint usually subsides over the week or two.

Children are relatively more active and physically involved in their daily activities. They are more prone to injury but at the same time also a higher pain threshold to endure these injuries without immediate medication. It may be just a knock or fall, but these are usual joint pains occurring time and again. The children will be able to overcome this joint pain once the injury is healed.

However, if the pain is persistent, lasted longer than usual and occurs now and then accompanied with swelling, rashes, stiffness in joints causing immobility, it is vital that the root cause of these symptoms be identified. And that proper treatment can be applied.

The 2 common joint problems in children are listed below;

Fractures

Being young and physically active, this is a common joint problem observed in children. The broken bones would have entirely limits the mobility with severe pain in the injured part imminent. Fractures require immediate treatment. The treatment usually employed plaster and splints, internal and external fixation.

Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA)

Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis is one of the most commonly seen type of joint pain in children. It is said to affect 1 out of every 1,000 children under the age group of 16. Symptoms of Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis are rather similar to that of the adult’s arthritis; joint pain and stiffness, swelling and restriction on mobility. Common Nonsteroidal-anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are good to address JRA.
